This project was inspired by the architecture of churches, from modern ones to historic landmarks like Saint Peter's Basilica, reflecting on how they connect people to their communities. During the process, I realized some of my habits were shaped by a past job where I spent two summers making fine furniture with an older Christian man who shared his beliefs with me. The bottom shape of the piece is inspired by a baptismal font I helped create, making it personally meaningful. The repetitive tasks, like sanding, reminded me of that time and led me to think about labor in art—questions like whether more labor always leads to a better result and how to be more efficient with less. These reflections also aligned with my learning about Fred Sandback's ability to activate space with simple materials and methods. The project was also my first-time steam-bending wood.
